photography

 I really liked Stuart Franklin's photography and his use of black and white. The first image I really enjoy the lights and darks but also the contrast the image gives between the human looking at the skeletons. It tells a story almost of life into death. I also like the use of lines and shapes in this image too - I think the framing of the skeletons is really good and also the different shape the person is making with their body too.  The second image is one of my favorite images. I really enjoy the shapes that the trees make and also the use of lines from the tree trunks. I enjoy the contrast between the sky and the tree's too. I like the texture that the leaves/branches of the tree give - I think this makes for a really mezmorizing image. 

 Loretta Lux is a German photographer whose main focus is contemporary art. She is known for her hauntingly surreal and dream like portraits. Lux usually focuses on children but she alters their faces to alienate them so they look different from their true appearance. I really liked Lux's work from the beginning of the semester when we were learning how to shoot depth of field and her book was one of the ones we used. I remember noticing it and thinking it was interesting. I also like that you have to really look at the images to notice that the faces of the children are slightly altered and that the backgrounds are painted. I chose to take/edit my images to go off of her style because I enjoy the way the backgrounds were altered and the portraits stood out.  I really like this image because the person looks unrealistically bigger than the background and it resonates with me because it looks super human almost.   I chose to write about Edward Honaker because I found his images really interesting. I also read a little about him and how he used his struggle with depression as inspiration for many of his photographs. I really like the images below. The first one I enjoy because it brings a lot of confusion and curiosity - I want to know more when I'm looking at the image. What was he thinking? how did he take this image and what did he do afterwards to make it look this way? This image makes me understand how he was feeling in a way because it screams anxiety. That is how my brain feels when I am feeling anxious or having a panic attack.  The second image is interesting to me because of the smashed mirror. It makes me wonder if the mirror was already smashed or if he purposely smashed it. I like the patterns and the uneasy feeling the image brings.  One quote I liked from the reading was "The digital photograph also can be said to represent a single moment, but one that can be easily lengthened and amplified by joining it to many other moments through various forms of hyperlinks and hybrid media, including extending it as a movie." I liked this because I never thought of a movie as an extension of an image but after reading this I realized that a movie is technically just hundreds of images after one another. I also like that he touches on hybrid media - this made me think of more abstract art.  Another quote I liked was "The photograph's frame, heretofore simply a container for the image, can now store a variety of hidden information that can help to contextualize and amplify the image's meanings, accessible to the interested reader."   I really enjoy Leibovitz's work. I especially like the Disney images she has captured (mainly because I love Disney) but also because everyone knows what it is. Without reading about the image you can see the castle in the mist and the "W" in the Disney font. I like that the castle isn't the main focus of the image but it is still very apparent beyond the misty background. I also enjoy the pop of color in the dress and how she captured this image in a place that makes the color of the dress stand out.  I like the second image simply because it is so different from the first. The first is fairytale and dreams and the second is rock and roll, cigarettes, and alcohol. I like that she captured this image in black and white because I think it sets the mood and gives it that rock and roll feel. I also like the use of depth of field -- you can see everything on the table but the bottom right corner is just a little blurred in order to have the people in the image the main

This first picture is interesting to me because there is so much to look at; the train, the people, and the bicycles. I like the contrast of the red train and the yellow writing. I also enjoy how he captured this image because it isn't posed and the people look natural and like they are just going about their everyday lives.  I like this image because it tells a story. you know that their is some kind of natural disaster yet the boy is remaining calm and trying to save his belongings. I like his use of photography to capture the story of this young boy. I also like the depth of field because you know when looking at the picture that the boy is the main focus of the image.
